I met Leo Kankkunen the way a man like that deserves to be met: underwater, thirty feet down, breathing air that didn't exist ninety seconds before he made it. He's a Finn from Helsinki. Team size: one. No co-founder. No lab of PhDs. No defense contract. Just a vest, a battery belt, and the most dangerous idea in hardware since somebody strapped a rocket to a sled and called it a hobby.

The number that broke my brain: one bottle of water holds enough oxygen to keep a human alive for a day. A day. Your entire breathing problem, solved by the thing you're already floating in.

Diving hasn't changed in a hundred years. You haul your air down with you — steel cylinders, hundreds of kilos to support a single long dive. Helium runs $100+ per tank. Professional systems cost tens of thousands of dollars. And after all that, diving is still 1,000Ɨ more dangerous than flying. A thousand times. You are safer in a tin can at 35,000 feet than in scuba gear at 100.

Leo's answer is electrolysis. DC current splits water into oxygen for your lungs and hydrogen for the mix — on demand, from the water you're already swimming in. A vest with triple-redundant electrolyzers. A battery belt, quadruple-redundant at the circuit level. A palm-sized battery that buys you an hour of air when you're tangled in a line at 200 meters.

Two hundred meters. Six hundred fifty feet. No nitrogen narcosis. No oxygen toxicity. No helium. Hydrogen leaves the body faster than nitrogen, so decompression time shrinks with it. Shoebox-sized system. Start the dive anywhere. Recharge with solar in the middle of nowhere. This is not an upgrade. This is the industry deleted.

Leo is the youngest top-certified electrical engineer in Europe, licensed to sign off high-voltage power-line construction. Served in the military. Certified diver. Two-time founder. He surfaced from a dive, sat in a coffee shop, and asked the question nobody had bothered to ask since 1920: fish breathe underwater without tanks. Why can't we? Same question Cousteau should have asked before he strapped on the first tank. Same question every navy on earth has paid billions to avoid.

He ran the physics. It's not a biology problem. It's an energy problem. We've been hauling the container when we should have been bringing the source.

Kankkunen runs the R&D the way you have to when the team is one — simulation-heavy, iteration-cheap, every failure mode priced in software before the first prototype ever touches water. When I was a younger man I drove a red convertible into Vegas with a trunk full of mescaline and a lawyer who kept quoting Conrad.
