Facebook aka Meta in on the AI Wars!
Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, has announced the release of its new Large Language Model Meta AI (LLaMA) to researchers.
According to Meta, the LLaMA models have been developed by their AI research team and can outperform OpenAI's GPT-3 despite being smaller in size.
The LLaMA models range from 7 billion to 65 billion parameters, which is smaller than GPT-3's 175 billion parameters.
First Off Meta and openAI and everyone else in this space— What is with all of these terrible platform names
Like did you layoff EVERY marketing person?
LLaMA??
WHY are you trying to make us pronounce this even.
this is the most boring news in the past four weeks of the AI Wars.
Facebook Marketing: are you trying to call your Artificial Intelligence Lama?
Is that the word you’re trying to get us to say??
Like just call it LAMA already its better than this upper case lower case synatx ASCii nonsense.
In any case, “Meta” - who must 110% be regretting this rebrand from Facebook- has stated that the LLaMA (Lama!) models are not being used in their products
So they’re NOT using it in WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook, but they will be made available to academic researchers on a case-by-case basis.
That's nice bro this is nice, why do I care about it then?
If I can’t take a selfie with it, make it write a book report for me- this isn’t a product.
Academic researchers? What do these guys make? Can I download that app?
Smaller? What is this A.I. for … Ants?
Nerds say this move is significant
As it provides researchers with access to powerful language models that can aid in advancing natural language processing research.
It's worth noting that the models underlying OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's LaMDA are not publicly available.
Thus, Meta's decision to release their LLaMA models to researchers offers a unique opportunity to compare and improve upon existing language models.
By providing access to their models, Meta is fostering innovation and encouraging further research in the field of natural language processing.
New Rule: Attention around your A.I. leads to Activation
Here’s the truth.
This is all about the A.I. hype cycle.
And regardless of wether you are releasing a great technology, users, developers and the so called media will trounce it if the polish isn’t on it.
No amount of ChatGPT3 hype could save Bing from it’s Evil Passive Aggressive Seattle Style personality that was finally revealed.
Back to the clone of Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg
I guess Meta has now gone from VR headsets that cost $12B to build and 8 guys in their moms basement use, to putting out powerful A.I. platforms with no street cred.
If there is one message about this new wave of A.I. it’s this;
The magic formula is perception right now.
Your A.I. is either
✅ scary and people will avoid it
✅ Friendly, useful; and consumers will use it
✅ Has a terrible acronym and no cool product name and people will ignore it
✅ Bing and hey remember Tay? The Nzi Bot Microsoft released in 2016?
The only winner above is item # 2.
Chat GPT3 is friendly and useful.
Now because of this— its blown up to 100M+ users (1B I bet) it has done exactly what iPhone did in the beginning of the SmartPhone Wars.
Chat GPT3 is top of mind.
Nobody knows the magic under the hood. Nobody cares.
It has become accessible. It’s a tangible benefit to us daily.
Now everyone and their grandma will have an A.I. business idea just like they had an app business idea in 2010-2020
This will be a boom for the developers that can actually build this stuff and it will inspire non technical founders to race in with more cool ideas.
Step 1 ChatGPT3 adopted as a product
Step 2 New GPT a.k.a. the backend A.I. platform powering it 2000 tools in 3 months.
step 3 Users willing to try new products
Step 4 Cash in on VC bucks
… And that is a Wrap.
