The Founders and their Story

Meet Pablo Palafox, Co-founder @ Happyrobot (YCS23).

In the course of pursuing a PhD in Computer Vision, Pablo engaged in a research internship at Meta, leading to a realization that even prominent corporations were grappling with the scarcity of data to train AI models. This realization coincided with the emergence of Foundation Models, specifically tailored for vision-centric applications, ushering in a wave of newfound possibilities.

Simultaneously, a collaborative effort took shape, when Pabloโ€™s buddy Luis (who he met on the second day of their joint robotics undergraduate program in Spain), and his sibling Javi (then occupying the role of CFO for Bertolli's North America division) teamed up.

From there, the trio embarked on a journey to explore ventures within the realm of earth observation, establishing collaborations with major players in satellite imagery like Satellogic.

So why EO? The choice of earth observation (EO) as a focal point stems from a meticulous analysis of potential domains where computer vision could make substantial contributions.

Upon thorough examination, it became evident that satellite and aerial data held the potential to unearth a multitude of insights about our world, far surpassing our current imaging capabilities. Until this juncture, the EO community had been grappling with the intricacies of analyzing petabytes of imagery. However, the advent of Large Vision-Language Models, also known as Foundation Models, has unveiled a treasure trove of opportunities within this landscape.

โ€œWe believe that most businesses will be benefitting from the insights extracted from overhead imagery in 10 years from now, enabling them to take critical investment and operational decisions.โ€ - Pablo Palafox

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿค– Navigating the Geospatial Landscape with Happyrobot: Your AI Copilot

Imagine the complexity of monitoring construction sites, oil & gas facilities, or even tracking vessel movements down the Mississippi River. Traditional methods of sifting through massive volumes of satellite and aerial imagery can be akin to searching for a needle in a haystack. Happyrobot steps in as the solution to this longstanding problem.

Happyrobot acts as an intelligent copilot, empowering users to efficiently analyze satellite and aerial imagery with the ease of conversational English queries. Governments, financial institutions, and infrastructure companies can now optimize their decision-making processes by harnessing the capabilities of AI.

๐Ÿ” Effortless Search and Analysis

The platform's intuitive interface allows users to enter plain English queries, translating their specific requirements into actionable insights. For instance, by typing โ€œfind all industrial storage sites with shipping containers in Londonโ€ or โ€œcount the trucks parked outside all warehouses in San Francisco,โ€ users can promptly access the desired information.

๐Ÿ“ธ A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Happyrobot goes a step further by enabling users to upload images of objects they seek to locate. The AI then utilizes visual similarity recognition to locate comparable objects within the imagery. This feature proves invaluable, as images often convey information that words alone cannot capture.

โš™๏ธ Seamless Functionality

The mechanics behind Happyrobot are both sophisticated and user-friendly. Users begin by selecting an Area of Interest (AOI) on a global scale. Whether sourcing geospatial imagery from partner platforms or utilizing custom imagery, the platform accommodates diverse preferences. The AI engine then interprets plain English queries or image examples to initiate the search process.

Happyrobot not only identifies valuable information but also compiles structured datasets. Users can generate automated reports or establish email notifications triggered by changes within their chosen AOI. For instance, imagine receiving an alert when a vessel departs from an oil and gas facility, enabling timely decision-making.

๐Ÿค Role of Community + Partnerships

When speaking with Pablo he mentioned, โ€œHaving Satellogic as our first customer, as well as a partner, was really critical to get our name out there. Especially in a space that is dominated by a few large players that own the satellites.โ€
